COLICO Lecture 2010
More Information, Smarter Society? was the topic of the COLICO lecture for 2010 which was delivered by Brian Trench, Senior Lecturer, School of Communications, Dublin City University.
This presentation took place on 22nd April at the LAI/CILIP conference in The Maldron Hotel,Tallaght, Dublin 24.
Brian Trench explored the role of libraries in assisting citizens and learners of all kinds to make their way through the proliferating information and the diversifying information sources available to them at a mouse-click. Information and media literacy acquires new meanings and new priority in an increasingly media-saturated society, where information is coming at citizens and learners from all directions.
The rapid development of digital media over the last two decades has challenged information workers to redefine their roles. In many respects, the established professional intermediaries between information sources and various publics have been displaced or have become dispensable. Librarians, teachers, journalists and many others need to consider how they can assist information users to navigate and negotiate the increasingly complex maps of information provision. Part of that challenge for librarians is, perhaps paradoxically, to insist on the particular value of the book and of its place in active reading.

Brian Trench is a senior lecturer in the School of Communications, Dublin City University, where he teaches and researches on subjects in science communication, journalism and Internet communication. He has led research projects and published papers and book chapters on science in media, information society, digital media and models of science communication. He is a member of the local organising committee for Euroscience Open Forum (City of Science), Dublin, July 2012, and is a former member of the Irish Council for Science Technology and Innovation.
