An Chomhairle Leabharlanna manages a training and development programme for public library staff with the support of a dedicated Standing Committee. Current training courses are listed below:

13th September and 7th October:
Introduction to Genealogical Sources
This one day course will provide an innovative introduction to Irish genealogy which will include: research processes, register office records, and other relevant resources including on-line repositories and services, as well as hands-on research. It is facilitated by John Grenham of the Irish Genealogical Research Society and is designed for public library staff.
29th September:
Moving on in MARC 21: computer and web resources
This course focuses on the bibliographic description of computer and web resources. The AACR2 elements of the topic are considered before exploring possibilities in the MARC 21 format.
11th and 12th October:
Management Issues in Public Libraries: a two-day induction training for grade 5 staff working in public libraries
This is a two-day induction training for grade 5 staff working in public libraries,covering library and related management issues, to enhance participants’ understanding of what their organisation expects of them as managers in today’s changing environment.
19th October:
Dealing With Difficult Behaviour in the Library
An Chomhairle Leabharlanna, presents this one-day training course which was very well received when scheduled in November 2009. This course is designed to empower staff in dealing with stressful situations in the library. The course is specifically designed to focus on difficult and challenging behaviour in a public library context.
20th October:
Management Issues in Public Libraries: a reflection and looking ahead. A follow-up course for Executive Librarians and Senior Librarians
A one-day follow-up training course for Executive Librarians and Senior Librarians, which will cover library and related management issues. This course is aimed at all Grade 6s who have completed the Management Issues in Public Libraries two day training course run by the IPA.
This course will review the changes that have occurred since the training course, will reflect on the challenges individuals have had to face and will look ahead at opportunities and threats posed in the current environment.
17th and 18th November:
Cost-effective Communications: making the best use of social media
An Chomhairle Leabharlanna, in response to popular demand, presents a repeat of this one-day intensive workshop in the use of social media in a creative, professional, organised and cost effective way. No prior knowledge of marketing, IT or social media is required.
25th November:
Resources in The National Library of Ireland
An Chomhairle Leabharlanna, in co-operation with The National Library of Ireland presents this valuable opportunity for public library staff to gain an insight into the holdings of The National Library of Ireland and to empower them in the provision of information in this area to their users.
The course will focus on new on-line resources, digitisation and developments in reader services.
Current On-line Training Course:
Frontline: an on-line reading development programme for public library staff
Frontline is an interactive online course for library staff developed in the U.K. by Opening the Book which has extensive experience of designing and delivering reading development training courses. Frontline can be taken anywhere, at any time, in variable timeslots of five minutes to two hours. It takes 28 hours to complete the course, and participants only need internet access and an email address.
